Social networking at work
A recent survey by job site Reed found that only 33 percent of UK employees check social media sites like Facebook at work.
The survey also revealed two-thirds of employees believe companies have the right to ban social media at work.
The department that checks social media sites the most is marketing with a staggering 44 percent. The IT department came second with 43 percent, then engineering at 33 percent and surprisingly finance at 27 percent.
Out of all the people that were surveyed the most popular social media network was of course Facebook with 45 percent. LinkedIn came in second with 20 percent and YouTube came third with 18 percent. Twitter surprisingly came fourth with just 14 percent.
Social networking a waste of time?
Reed also revealed what people thought about social media in the work place. One person argued social networking is a waste of time and that face-to-face is the only way to communicate in business. Another individual believes motivated employees will use social media effectively for work-related activities.
When asked what social media is for, 35 percent thought it was for business use, 10 percent for personal use and 55 percent for both.
Online brand awareness
In my opinion, social networking is great way to communicate in business and offers an opportunity to push a brand further online.
It is another way to communicate with customers and keep them interested in a brand. Whether it is a simple status update, a new blog or new pictures, social media networks are a good way to engage customers.
Should we see more use of social media networks in the office? If it is for work-related activities then definitely.
